The sites and monuments section is responsible for research, national heritage registry, conservation and planning for the development of cultural sites and monuments for tourism in Uganda.

SITES AND MONUMENTS

The sites and monuments section is responsible for research, national heritage registry, conservation and planning for the development of cultural sites and monuments for tourism in Uganda. With over 600 sites and monuments documented, about 56 are maintained and preserved at national level. The sites include; rock shelters with paintings and engravings, caves, forest groves and earthworks,
Historical buildings, old settlements such as palaces, colonial forts and their associated legend with human occupation,
Memorial sites related to massacres during the colonial times of the country, prehistoric early occupations of apes and man.
Sites and Monuments unit is responsible for;
i. Administration and regulation on monuments and sites in Uganda
ii. Undertake research and publish about heritage sites and issue permits
iii. Inspect, monitor and audit monuments and heritage sites operations
iv. Compile, publish and disseminate data information concerning the cultural and natural heritage resources of Uganda
